Viking range burner won't light or keeps clicking: what to check

Viking professional-style ranges use powerful sealed burners with electronic ignition and, on many models, automatic re-ignition. When a burner refuses to light or the igniters click non-stop, the cause is usually moisture, food debris or a misaligned burner cap. Turn the burner knobs off and let the cooktop cool before working on it.

Burner clicks but won't light

  1. Check the burner cap. If the cap is not seated perfectly flat on the burner base, the flame will not form or carry to the igniter. Lift it and set it back so it sits level.
  2. Clean the burner ports. Boil-overs clog the small ports around the burner. Use a straight pin or a soft brush, not a toothpick that can break off.
  3. Clean the igniter. Wipe the white ceramic igniter gently with a cloth and a little rubbing alcohol. Grease can stop the spark from jumping to the burner.
  4. Confirm gas supply. If no burners light, check that other gas appliances work and that the range shut-off valve is open.

Igniters clicking constantly

Constant clicking with all knobs off is most often caused by moisture: water or a spill has reached the igniters or the spark switches behind the knobs. Remove the caps and let the cooktop dry for several hours, or run the oven briefly to warm the area. If clicking continues once dry, a spark switch or the spark module may have failed.

Burner lights but goes out

On re-ignition systems, the range sparks again if it senses the flame has gone out. A burner that lights, goes out and re-clicks may have a clogged port, a draft from a nearby window or vent hood, or a failing sensor or module.

Flame quality

Even blue flameNormal.
Yellow or orange tipsDirty burner or air shutter adjustment; occasional orange flecks from dust are normal.
Lifting or roaring flamePossible incorrect orifice or pressure, often after a fuel conversion. Needs a professional.

When to get help

If you smell gas, turn the burner off, ventilate, and if the smell persists leave the house and call your gas utility. Spark modules, switches and gas valves are parts for a qualified technician.
