Front-load vs. top-load washers: which should you buy?
The choice between a front-load and a top-load washer affects how your laundry room is laid out, how long your cycles take and how much water you use. Neither is better for everyone. Here is how they compare.
Three main types
- Front-load: the drum turns on a horizontal axis and tumbles clothes through a small amount of water.
- Top-load with agitator: the traditional design, with a central post that moves clothes through deeper water.
- High-efficiency top-load: uses an impeller or wash plate instead of an agitator and less water than a traditional top-loader.
Comparison
| Water use | Front-load lowest; HE top-load moderate; agitator highest. |
|---|---|
| Energy use | Front-loaders typically use less, partly because faster spins leave clothes drier for the dryer. |
| Cleaning | Front-load and HE top-load clean well; agitators handle heavily soiled work clothes well. |
| Gentleness | Front-load is gentlest; agitators are hardest on fabrics. |
| Cycle time | Agitator top-loads are often fastest; front-loaders often longest. |
| Odor and mold | Front-loaders need door-seal care; top-loaders are less prone. |
| Ergonomics | Front-loaders need bending unless on a pedestal; top-loaders are easier to load. |
| Space | Front-loaders can stack with a dryer. |
Repairs and reliability
Front-loaders have door locks, door boots and, at high spin speeds, heavy demands on drum bearings. Bearings and the spider arm that supports the drum are the expensive failures. Traditional top-loaders are mechanically simpler, with common repairs such as lid switches, couplings and drive parts. HE top-loaders sit between the two.
Which to choose
- Choose a front-loader if you want the lowest water and energy use, need to stack the pair, and are happy to leave the door ajar after washing.
- Choose a top-loader if you prefer to load without bending, want shorter cycles or wash a lot of heavily soiled clothes.
