KitchenAid dishwasher not cleaning dishes well: what to check
KitchenAid dishwashers have a reputation for cleaning well, so cloudy glasses or food left on plates usually point to something simple. Most newer KitchenAid models use a manual filter that needs regular cleaning, and a clogged filter is the most common cause of poor results.
1. Clean the filters
Remove the lower rack and twist out the filter assembly at the base of the tub. Rinse the upper and lower filters under warm running water, scrubbing gently with a soft brush. Check the area under the filter for glass, bones or seeds. Many owners have never cleaned the filter; doing it monthly makes a large difference.
2. Check the spray arms
Spin each arm by hand. It should turn freely and not hit tall items. Remove the arms (most unclip or unscrew) and clear the holes with a toothpick. Hard water can leave scale that blocks the jets.
3. Hot water at the start
Dishwashers clean best when they fill with hot water. Run the kitchen tap until it is hot before you start a cycle. The water heater should deliver around 120 °F at the tap.
4. Detergent and rinse aid
- Use fresh detergent; powder and pods that have absorbed moisture clean poorly.
- Keep the rinse aid dispenser filled, especially if glasses come out spotty or plastics wet.
- In hard water areas, a cycle with a dishwasher cleaner every month or two helps remove scale.
5. Loading
Face dirty surfaces toward the spray, keep large items at the sides and back of the lower rack, and do not block the detergent dispenser or the path to the upper spray arm. Avoid nesting bowls and spoons.
6. Mechanical faults
| Weak spray, humming | Circulation pump or wash motor problem. |
|---|---|
| Detergent pod not dissolving | Dispenser door not opening, or blocked by a tall item. |
| Dishes cold at end | Heating element or thermistor fault. |
| Water left in bottom | Drain blockage — see filters and drain hose. |
