How to level a washing machine and stop it shaking
A washing machine that shakes, walks across the floor or bangs during spin is usually not broken — it is simply not level, or not standing firmly on all four feet. Leveling takes about 15 minutes and protects the machine's suspension and bearings.
What you need
- A spirit level (a short torpedo level is fine).
- An adjustable wrench or the right size open-ended wrench for the leg lock nuts.
- A helper to tilt the machine.
Step by step
- Remove shipping bolts on a new front-loader if they are still fitted. Running a washer with transit bolts in place causes violent shaking and damage.
- Check side to side and front to back by placing the level on top of the machine.
- Loosen the lock nuts on the front legs, then screw each leg in or out until the machine is level. Keep the legs as short as possible for stability.
- Check for rocking by pressing diagonally on each top corner. Any movement means a leg is not touching the floor.
- Tighten the lock nuts up against the cabinet. This is the step most people miss, and without it the legs work loose again.
Self-leveling rear legs
Some top-load washers have rear legs that adjust themselves. Tilt the washer forward a few inches with the help of a second person and set it down gently; the rear legs settle to the floor. Then adjust the front legs as above.
Floor problems
- Bouncy wooden floors amplify vibration. Placing the washer near a wall or over a joist helps; a rigid platform or reinforcement may be needed.
- Uneven concrete may need a leg extended further than usual.
- Anti-vibration pads can reduce noise but should not be used to make up for poor leveling.
Still shaking?
If a level washer still bangs, check the load first: one heavy item such as a rug can throw the drum off balance. Persistent shaking with every load may mean worn suspension rods, springs or shock absorbers, or failing drum bearings.
