Refrigerator not cooling but the freezer works: causes and fixes
In most frost-free refrigerators, the cold is made in the freezer and blown into the fresh-food section through a vent or damper. So when the freezer is fine but the fridge is warm, the problem is usually that cold air is not getting through. Put a thermometer in the fridge; it should read about 37 °F.
1. Blocked air vents
Check the vents between the freezer and the fridge. A bag of frozen vegetables pushed against a vent, or packed shelves in front of the fridge outlet, can stop the airflow. Clear them and wait a few hours.
2. Evaporator fan
Open the freezer door and press the door switch. You should hear and feel a fan running behind the freezer back panel. If it is silent, noisy or slow, the fan motor may have failed. The freezer can stay cold for a while without it, but the fridge warms up.
3. Frost on the evaporator
Frost or ice visible on the back panel of the freezer, or a fan that is noisy because it is hitting ice, suggests a defrost system fault: the heater, defrost thermostat, or the control or timer. A manual defrost (unplug with doors open for 24 hours, with towels down) will temporarily restore cooling, but the fault will return.
4. Air damper
Many refrigerators use a damper to control how much cold air enters the fridge. If it sticks closed, the fridge warms up. Some are mechanical; others are motorized and controlled electronically.
5. Condenser coils and fan
Dirty coils or a failed condenser fan make the whole system weaker. The fridge section often warms first. Vacuum the coils and check the condenser fan near the compressor is running.
6. Temperature sensor or control
A faulty thermistor or control board can misread temperatures. These need testing with a meter.
Diagnosis summary
| Fan silent | Evaporator fan motor or control |
|---|---|
| Frost on back panel | Defrost system |
| Fan runs, no airflow into fridge | Damper or blocked duct |
| Both sections slightly warm | Coils, condenser fan or sealed system |
Many of these faults come up again and again in service calls. SmartFix Appliances has a good overview of the refrigerator problems technicians see most often. If your refrigerator has an ice maker that also stopped, see our ice maker troubleshooting guide.
Questions owners ask
- How long will food stay safe in a warm fridge?
- Perishable food should not sit above 40 °F for more than about two hours. Move it to the freezer or a cooler with ice while you troubleshoot.
